While all the new films at this weekend’s box office look promising, there’s a definite headliner. And that headliner is pretty damn astounding. Black Panther has finally arrived in theaters, after months of hype, and the reviews are stellar. The Washington Post raved, “A film that fulfills the most rote demands of superhero spectacle, yet does so with style and subtexts that feel bracingly, joyfully groundbreaking.” RogerEbert.com claims it “transcends the superhero genre to emerge as an epic of operatic proportions.” Vanity Fair calls it “a welcome refreshment.” It is also likely to break multiple box office records. But there’s also Early Man, a caveman comedy for the kiddos from British stop-motion animation legend Nick Park, with voice talent assists from Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, and Maisie Williams. And it is also getting a warm critical reception. In limited release this weekend, you’ll find The Party, which should be a treasure for anyone who likes to see powerhouse performances from revered actresses with gravitas: Patricia Clarkson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emily Mortimer, and Cherry Jones costar in this acerbic black comedy with a political edge. We also get the American bow of Loveless, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and is a contender in the foreign film race at the Oscars. The Russian tragedy focuses on two estranged parents who come together after their young son goes missing. Just about the only thing the critics are not raving about in theaters this weekend is the wide release of Samson, a biblical epic whose biggest star is Billy Zane.

Surprise Weddings

Your Hopes of Marrying Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer only just made her long-rumored relationship with chef Chris Fischer Instagram-official over the weekend, so it surprised fans when she revealed that they actually got married in a ceremony in Malibu, Caifornia, on February 13. Guests included Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Aniston, Larry David, Jake Gyllenhaal (a longtime friend of the groom, actually), and a bevy of comedy stars. As a comedian, Schumer couldn’t pass up the opportunity for some fun. The marriage was presided over by cult comedian John Early in character as his Midwestern mother character “Vicky With a V” (who was, indeed, not without her denim). Rumors that Schumer and Fischer were seeing each other emerged only in September, and the pair was first spotted out in public in November. Sometimes when you know, you just know. Incidentally, the release date for Schumer’s next film, I Feel Pretty, was just bumped up two months, to April, meaning Schumer’s promotional duties will be bumped up as well. Still plenty of time for a honeymoon, though.

Netflix’s Growing Roster

Just a few months after announcing it had signed Shonda Rhimes to a $100 million exclusive deal, word broke that Netflix has signed Ryan Murphy to a similar agreement, one that could be worth up to $300 million over five years. Suddenly, the streaming service is home to two of traditional television’s most prolific (and, not to mention, most inclusive) producing powerhouses. (It should be noted that in both cases, their existing series will remain at their original homes.) The news comes after it was announced that Disney (which already owns ABC, home to Rhimes shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal) will buy Fox (owner of the channels Murphy worked with) and as the entire industry waits for Disney to create its own exclusive streaming service, which some have already taken to calling a Netflix-killer. There’s definitely a battle of bigger giants happening here behind the scenes. Though, for our couch-potato purposes, we’re just wondering how Rhimes’s and Murphy’s talents will adapt to streaming. It’s not a guarantee that titans ot terrestrial television always succeed on the streamers. Chuck Lorre, the man behind may of CBS’s most lucrative sitcoms, like The Big Bang Theory and Moms, recently tried his hand at Netflix with Disjointed. It was quietly canceled after a single season this week. The show starred Kathy Bates, but maybe she’ll find work on Netflix yet. She’s a Murphy favorite as well, and suddenly he has a lot of new shows to create and cast.
