Insidious

A nice thing you can say about the Insidious horror-flick franchise is that it has provided a surprising vehicle for 74-year-old series star Lin Shaye, a veteran character actress many may remember best as Magda, the overtanned landlady from There’s Something About Mary. A not-so-nice thing you can say is…well, we’ll leave that to the critics. The fourth installment, Insidious: The Last Key, is the only truly new wide-release film this weekend, and critics aren’t too hot on it (which may not be much of a surprise). But the industry still expects it to scare up some solid business. Otherwise, Molly’s Game, which stars Jessica Chastain as an underground poker queenpin caught up in a federal investigation, goes wide. Critics do like that one; indeed, Chastain is nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. But when all is said and done, the actual battle for No. 1 still belongs to Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The Star Wars flick could reach its fourth week atop the box office, but the surprisingly strong Jumanji has been knocking on its door ever since its release.

Stalkers

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are two of Hollywood’s most in-demand young actresses and two of the town’s closest friends. The dynamic duo recently sat down for a joint interview with W and detailed the surprising circumstance of their first meeting. It involved a stalker. As has been detailed, Jennifer and Emma were first introduced to each other via text by Woody Harrelson, but when they first met up they had another “text buddy” in common. “We both had the same stalker. His name was ‘John the Orchestra Guy.’ He would ‘accidentally’ text us,” said Lawrence. “He wasn’t really a stalker. He was this guy who had a lot of people’s numbers.” Meanwhile, both Lawrence and Stone had been texting each other for more than a year but had never met, and when they finally decided to meet, Lawrence had a sudden scare that she might not actually have been texting with Stone: “I’m like, Oh my God, what if this is John the Orchestra Guy? So then I called you and we were like…hello? That’s the first thing we had in common.” John the Orchestra Guy was not available for comment.

Golden Globes Blackout

The Golden Globes go down this weekend, but don’t expect a lot of traditional best-dressed lists. Many Hollywood actresses (and actors) are joining together for a fashion “blackout,” meaning they’ll show up in head-to-toe black. Designer black likely, but black nonetheless. Some have criticized the move, but Rashida Jones recently set the record straight. The idea is to take the focus off of the fashion, and to talk more about systematic inequality and harassment in workplaces in Hollywood and beyond. “This is not a silent protest,” Jones told InStyle. “I don’t think why we wear black is divisive as much as it is being discussed and debated without all the facts. Many women on the red carpet will discuss what’s important to them about their choice to protest and wear black.” The issue will be front-and-center on the red carpet. Now we’ll just have to see how the actual broadcast handles it when it airs, Sunday, at 8 p.m., on NBC.
