Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to do just about as well as a movie that tips to nostalgia and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart should. It’s number one at the box office once again with about $34.3 million over four days, and is just a few million away from becoming the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man live-action title of all time for its studio, Sony. The real story of the weekend, though, is The Post, which rolled out nationwide and notched a second-place finish with about $22.2 million. Basically, it’s doing about as well as a timely prestige picture starring Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and all your favorite actors from critically acclaimed television shows (Carrie Coon! Sarah Paulson! Bob Odenkirk!) under the direction of Steven Spielberg should. Sure, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri saw a solid increase of 226 percent over the weekend following its domination of the Golden Globes, but The Post was clearly the awards season movie of choice this weekend among theater goers. As for the actual new releases, well, the Liam Neeson–starring, public transit–themed action vehicle The Commuter pulled into third place with $16 million. Meanwhile, both Paddington 2 and Proud Mary underperformed with performances that put them at seventh ($13.2 million) and eighth ($10.9 million) place, respectively.

Logomania As Usual

Nostalgia-driven logomania has definitely taken hold of fashion, especially among many maxamilism-happy millennials. So what to do if you’re Miuccia Prada? Well, apparently you look back into your own archives. At the brand’s Fall 2018 Menswear show, Prada looked back to the brand’s signature black Pocone nylon handbags and sporty ourterwear and remixed the pieces with the busiest prints from seasons past, then added a bucket hat for good measure. It was a collection that took note of the current trends in the market (while also, perhaps, slyly commenting on them), yet remained uniquely Prada. On Twitter over the weekend, both the pure fashion nerds (an audience Prada always has on lock) and the hypebeasts (a set Prada hasn’t truly reached) went gaga over the results. If some hypebeasts were to suddenly list their Balenciaga speed trainers and Louis Vuitton x Supreme stash on Grailed to save up for a piece from the collection, we would not be surprised. When Ridley Scott took the bold decision to suddenly recast Kevin Spacey in All the Money in the World with Christopher Plummer, necessitating last-minute reshoots, Michelle Williams’s response was unhesitant. She jumped aboard the Thanksgiving week reshoots and was paid just $1,000. Meanwhile, her costar Mark Wahlberg and his agents negotiated an extra $1.5 million for the same work. Apparently, unlike Williams, his contract allowed him to renegotiate in case of any reshoots. When the news went public, the vast disparity caused righteous outrage. Not only did the situation start because of sexual abuse allegations against Spacey, but it also came in the midst of serious discussions about overall gender inequality and the resulting wage gap in Hollywood. After a week of pressure, Wahlberg announced he’d donate his $1.5 million to the Time’s Up fund, while his agency, WME, donated an additional $500,000 in Williams’s name. It was Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant who made the most clever public comment with a bit on the show’s “Weekend Update” segment about how many women are so eager to be accommodating and polite while men have an instinct to benefit only themselves. “It would be so cool if it didn’t take a weeklong public shaming to do the right thing,” she said. “Maybe do a daily private shaming which is what I have done my entire damn life.”
