Jumanji, Finally

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has been 2018’s only number-one movie, having held the top spot all January. Finally, we have a new champ in Maze Runner: The Death Cure. The third and final film in a franchise that’s popular among both domestic teens and foreign audiences scored $23.5 million on our shores (and is up to $107 million globally). Jumanji, meanwhile, held on for second place. Hostiles, a Western that failed to get Christian Bale an Oscar nom, still managed to overperform with audiences despite coming up empty during awards season. Its $10.2 million in its first weekend of wide release was higher than expected. As for films that actually did get Oscar noms, a few that are still in theaters saw noticeable bumps. The Shape of Water, which scored the most nominations of any films, also expanded wider this weekend and saw a 160 percent bump in ticket sales. Business for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri increased 87.8 percent, and Lady Bird took in 61.2 percent more than last year. Oddly, both Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour, which surprised prognosticators by scoring Best Picture nods, both actually saw their total grosses drop by double-digit percentages.

Hmm, what to make of the Grammys. Somehow, SZA didn’t win Best New Artist. Forty-one years after pioneering the genre, Kraftwerk was finally given its first competitive Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Ed Sheeran won Best Pop Solo Performance over a quartet of powerhouse vocalists, and then wasn’t even there to collect the award. Basically, we’re of the opinion that winners and losers shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Still, as a televised spectacle it has its moments. See all the standout red carpet looks here (and peep the Jenny Holzer essay Lorde had sewn into her Valentino dress here). Rihanna dressed as the red dress emoji for a super stylish performance of “Wild Thoughts,” Patti LuPone finally symbolically buried the hatchet with longtime enemy Andrew Lloyd Webber by performing in a tribute to the producer, Miley Cyrus joined Elton John for a performance of “Tiny Dancer” and Kesha gave a powerful performance of “Praying” that brought both the singer and half the audience to tears. Bruno Mars ultimately prevailed in the three top categories, but that’s just how the Grammys operate even if no one will really look back at 2017 in music and declare it the year of Bruno Mars. Though, for the first awards show we’ve seen in some time that didn’t involve Nicole Kidman, it was, all in all, a decent ceremony.

Sundance As a Launching Platform for the Oscars

Sometimes the Sundance Film Festival is the first step toward the Oscars. This year’s nominated films, including Get Out, Call Me by Your Name, Mudbound, and The Big Sick, all premiered at last year’s festival. Sometimes, though, it’s just not, and with the festival over in Utah, few films are coming out with assured Oscar buzz. None of the narrative films are being pegged as possible Best Picture nominees, and some of the standout acting jobs come with caveats. Laura Dern gave one of the festival’s most buzzed about performances of the festival in The Tale as a woman coming to grips with the sexual assault she experienced as a 13-year-old, but HBO Films bought the movie with apparent plans to premiere it on television instead (congratulations on your Oscar, Laura). Chloë Sevigny gave one of the best performances of her career in Lizzie, but even she’s publicly admitting the film has some problems otherwise. Toni Collette is getting raves for horror film Hereditary, but it is a horror film. That film, at least, could prove to be a box-office hit, as could other high-profile genre films out of the festival including American Animals, which stars Evan Peters and a bunch of other young buzzy actors plotting a heist, and Assassination Nation, which stars Hari Nef, Suki Waterhouse, and other assorted fashion world It girls as teen girls out for revenge against the patriarchy. Meanwhile, official Sundance awards went to Chloë Grace Moretz–starring The Miseducation of Cameron Post (about a queer teen forced into conversion therapy), Garrett Hedlund–starring drug smuggler film Burden, and a documentary about rapper M.I.A., among others.
