With the passage of time we’ll remember this as the year the Oscars embraced genre films: Fairy tale fantasies (The Shape of Water), allegorical horror movies (Get Out), and superhero blockbusters (most surprisingly, perhaps, with a screenwriting nod for Logan) all got their due when the nominations were announced Tuesday morning. But in a certain sense we already knew that, thanks to all the preceding ceremonies and prognosticating blogs. So instead, let’s talk about the thing no one necessarily saw coming: Turns out the Academy really, really loved both Phantom Thread and Darkest Hour. Each scored six nominations, higher than most had assumed. Same for Denzel Washington, who scored something of a surprise best actor nod for Roman J. Israel, Esq., although, yes, it was a weak category this year, especially with the recent controversy around James Franco’s sexual misconduct. Meanwhile, The Post underperformed expectations with just two nominations (of course, one was for Meryl), while Wonder Woman was completely shut out. Couture week is always exciting, and the standard-bearers prove why. Chanel showed in a dreamy “secret garden” set, sent Kaia Gerber down the runway for her first couture show, and, in a stunning twist, sent out a model in a very fancy white wedding tux for the final look, which is traditionally a wedding gown. And Dior’s showing is being pegged as the strongest yet for designer Maria Grazia Chiuri. The collection included feminist statements spelled out in temporary tattoos, and some surrealist eye gear. Though, it’s always fun when a new designer enters the fray. Clare Waight Keller became a fashion favorite for her work at Chloé, and just showed her first-ever couture collection for Givenchy. Mixing house classics with a modern outlook, the collection is being viewed as a rousing success. Unfortunately, the week was rocked with a bit of controversy as well. Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko sent Russian socialite Miroslava Duma a personal note that riffed on lyrics from a Kanye West and Jay-Z song. It included a racial slur, and apparently neither woman thought twice of it because Duma uploaded the note to her Instagram stories. Controversy spread at the speed of Wi-Fi, with even Naomi Campbell chiming in by the end of the day. Reportedly, several industry figures opted to skip Sergeenko’s show that day as well. Both woman have since apologized.

Middle Names

Middle names are apparently over. We don't need census data to confirm this. All we need is Chicago West's just-released birth certificate. For the third time in a row, Kim and Kanye have opted to forgo the tradition of the middle name, leaving Chicago, like her elder siblings North and Saint, without one. Notably, neither of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins Sir and Rumi have middle names, either (Blue Ivy obviously does, but still, “Ivy” almost feels like the second part of her first name). Unless we’re behind on our mommy blog reading, this seems to only be a trend among these near-royal couples, but we wouldn’t be surprised if more followed suit. Besides, if you’re choosing such strong first names for your children like “North” and “Sir,” why water it down with some middle name?
