Guess which ones wound up on the Time 100, the annual list of the most influential people in the world? Assuredly the latter. Gucci’s Alessandro Michele and Calvin Klein’s Raf Simons both appear, as does curvy supermodel Ashley Graham. Stylish actresses Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Sarah Paulson. One of the more surprising (and yet completely obvious) inclusions? Drag mother of them all RuPaul. In fact, Naomi Campbell was charged with righting a tribute to the queen. “As soon as I saw him, I wanted to know where he was going, because that was where I wanted to be,” she recalls of meeting Ru for the first time back in the ‘90s. As for those other kinds of “influencers,” they might want to be careful at the moment. The Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on Instagram power-users who post paid content without informing their followers. | | | | The Reviews for the Movies to Choose From This Weekend | After a string of beauties, beasts, boss babies and bad boys in cars, five new flicks open in wide release at the theater this weekend. Though, of the four that have been screened for critics, none has exactly wowed, and box office analysts don’t expect any to overtake The Fate and The Furious, at least moviegoers have a lot of choice. The most notable might be Free Fire, the Brie Larson and Armie Hammer-starring period piece about an extended shoot out in an abandoned warehouse. That means there’s tons of guns, if that’s your thing. For something more gentle, Disney is unleashing nature documentary Born in China about endangered species in the countries. Naturally, pandas star. Then there’s The Promise, a film about the Armanian genocide that Kim Kardashian and Cher both approve of. There’s also Unforgettable, which stars Katherine Heigl as a woman hell-bent on destroying the life of her ex-husband’s new wife, played by Rosario Dawson (critics think it’s bad, but someone out there has to think that it’s so bad, it’s good). Finally, there’s Phoenix Forgotten, about a real-life event that was supposedly the most viewed UFO sighting in history. Ironically, critics have not been given a chance to widely view the movie pre-release. | | | | Netflix is unveiling five originals for streaming today. There’s Girlboss, a series loosely based on the real story of Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso, that seemed like a play to fill the gap recently left by Girls, but the reviews so far aren’t great (ironic considering a plot point is the lead character’s bad eBay seller reviews). Of course, Bill Nye returns with a new streaming series on Netflix this weekend (Karlie Kloss is a correspondent). Netflix also has Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On (a documentary about cam girls), not particularly well-reviewed Iraq war drama Sand Castle, and the heist-cum-romance film Tramps. Maybe, though, the weekend really belongs to HBO. They’ve got the Oprah-starring TV movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks set for Saturday, and the return of Silicon Valley on Sunday. | | | | | | | | | | | The former America’s Next Top Model contender is now actual fashion royalty, popping up in new ads for both Nike and Marc Jacobs in the past few days alone. | | | | | | | | James McAvoy, 38 (Young Xavier) Andie MacDowell, 59 (L’Oreal Girl For Life) Iggy Pop, 70 (Punk Survivor) Queen Elizabeth II, 91 (Actual Queen) | | | | | | | |
