In: Female Superheroes | Out: Dudes in Spandex

Lauren Hutton is an It-girl once again at 73. Meanwhile, female superheroes are closer to having a moment on screen.

Girls a Third Her Age

At 73, Lauren Hutton once again seems to be the most talked about model in the world, perhaps unsurprising for the woman who still holds the title for most appearances on the cover of American Vogue, was a Richard Avedon muse, and was the original gap-toothed cutie. After popping up back on a runway last fall at Bottega Veneta (hand-in-hand with Gigi Hadid, no less), Hutton is now one of the latest faces (and bodies) of Calvin Klein Underwear. She stars in a short Sofia Coppola-directed film featuring models of all ages. While her co-stars include Rashida Jones and Kirsten Dunst, it’s Hutton who steals the show. Then again, she’s always been quite the It-girl

Letting the Dudes Have All The Fun

Current W May cover girl Gal Gadot will make history when Wonder Woman hits theaters this summer, but she won’t be the only woman suiting up as a superhero anytime soon. Marvel’s first female-fronted flick, the Brie Larson-starring Captain Marvel, took a big step in development on Wednesday. The studio announced that directorial duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will helm the film. The pair is best known for indie flicks like Ryan Gosling’s Half Nelson, but Marvel isn’t afraid to take risks on lesser known directorial talent. It’s also good to know that one of the directors will be a woman (as are the two screenwriters attached to the project). Marvel also unveiled the trailer for its next TV show yesterday. This one finds male-female crime fighting duo Cloak & Dagger (yes, they’re relatively obscure) reimagined as moody but righteous teens. It premieres early next year in Freeform. Add all this to the still recent news of Joss Whedon developing a Batgirl movie, and things are starting to look up for female crime fighters on screens big and small.

New York

Want the freshest fashion? Go west, young man (or woman). California seems to be all the rage right now in style. Of course there’s Kanye West’s Calabasas casual wear, then there’s the new California-inspired capsule collected from Mr Porter. It features pieces from 12 brands, all based in the Golden State. Tommy Hilfiger and Rebecca Minkoff held their last runway shows in the L.A.-area. Rihanna just had a Fenty x Puma pop-up in the city. Even the Council of Fashion Designers of America, (long concentrated in New York) is ramping up its efforts to nurture and keep close connections with designers in the state. "For 2017, we have an enhanced focus on being more engaged in L.A., creating more of a feeling of family, networking, professional development, just having a greater presence and supporting the West Coast designers,” CFDA chief executive Steven Kolb told Fashionista
