Hopefully The Handmaid’s Tale in Real Life

More than thirty years after becoming a literary sensation, Margaret Atwood’s classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale has finally been adapted for the screen, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The story about a dystopian future where a group of women have been turned basically into breeding machines seems particularly relevant at this Trumpian moment. “The circumstances that have given rise to it having this sudden uptick are quite frightening,” Atwood told W of the revival of interest in the book. “If I had a choice of two things—book not popular, circumstances not arise, or book popular, due to certain circumstances—I would of course pick the first one. But those were not my choices.” Meanwhile, star Elisabeth Moss was just more concerned that the adaptation remained faithful. “I really felt like if we were going to attempt this great, prolific novel that’s meant so much to so many people, it had to be really—as we’ve said many times—balls to the wall. It had to be dark, it had to be realistic, it had to be beautifully shot. And it had to live up to the book,” she said. You can now decide for yourself. The first three episodes premiered at midnight on Hulu.

Hollywood Solitude

So Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone not only all won Oscars before the age of 30, they also maintain a super exclusive group text. In the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Larson explains that she relied on digital support from Lawrence and Stone (and occasionally Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer too) after shooting to superstardom with her award-winning role in Room. In case you’re wondering how the trio met, the surprising answer in Woody Harrelson. The Cheers actor has co-starred with all three women in separate projects, and took it upon himself to introduce one to the other. “It’s hard in this business, especially at that age, to experience celebrity and all the perks and all the temptations of celebrity,” Harrelson told VF. “It’s incredible how they’ve navigated fame and stayed the people they are.”

Gucci and Dior’s Major Business News

Mall Fashion

Gucci-mania is very real, and it’s very profitable. Creative Director Alessandro Michele was brought in to reverse a slight sales slump for the Italian house, and he’s more than succeeded. According to The Financial Times, Gucci sales are up about 50 percent in the first quarter for the Kering-owned label (likewise, Kering-owned Saint Laurent and Balenciaga also saw major sales growth). Meanwhile, Kering’s main luxury conglomerate competitor, LVMH, has news of its own. They’ve bought out complete control of Dior in a $13.1 billion deal. So, all is good in the land of high fashion, but not so much for mainstream retailers. Indeed, after parting ways with Jenna Lyons, J. Crew continues to make changes. Its lesser-known menswear designer, Frank Muytjens, who replaced the now very successful men’s designer Todd Snyder, is also heading for the door. There are worse fates in the land of mall fashion, though. Bebe is closing all of its stores by the end of next month. So much for the return of Aughts fashion. Someone deliver the news to Paris Hilton.

Popular Portland-based photographer Clark certainly doesn’t use FaceTune on the images she uploads to Instagram. Mostly because in most of her shots the model’s faces are obscured.
