Prosthetics as a Fashion Statement?

In a society where we are always tweaking this or that in the pursuit of perfection, it makes sense that the most pointed response may be actual prosthetics—as in taking fake body accoutrements from the world of fantasy movie makeup into street style. Feminist artists like ORLAN and Cindy Sherman have been playing with the idea for years in their work. Lady Gaga has dabbled in prosthetics as well. Gucci had some prosthetic-enhanced models during its latest show. Now Cara Delevingne has gotten in on what may or may not turn out to be a trend. This week, the model and actress appeared in the front row of Dior’s fashion show decked out in the label’s standard chic pieces, but if you looked closer, you’d notice some not-quite-human-like features. Indeed, she seemed to have slightly unsettling prosthetic ridges inserted into her ears. Some speculated that it might have been part of her costume for her upcoming fantasy TV show, Carnival Row, but the model-turned-actress has so far offered no explanation. Though, maybe it’s not too long until we’re all using some molded latex and spirit gum to literally glue on new features to our bodies in the name of standing out.

Remember last year’s Oscar red carpet? Quick: Who wore the silk designer column gown with the glitzy but tasteful jewels, perfect hair, and high heels? Oh, right, practically everyone. Red carpet style has never been more uniform and predictable, and in a new column for W, Sofia Coppola knows who to blame: celebrity stylists. The director recalled a time when Anjelica Huston shopped for fabric rather than a completed dress, when Cybill Shepherd wore high-top sneakers, when Björk wore that swan dress, and when Cher wore whatever the hell she wanted, and she misses it. “Ever since people started to worry about the reviews their outfits might receive, stylists have become a necessity, and you rarely see personality come through,” she wrote. “These days, many stylists are being paid by the brands they push, and some actresses regularly decide on a dress based on the fee they will receive to wear it.” Though she still sees some hope in the likes of Chloë Sevigny and Tracee Ellis Ross, she wonders what impact the rest of the celebrity pack’s uniform glamour and perfect polish has on women watching at home. “I wish the business of fashion wouldn’t get in the way of personal style and self-expression, and would give us something to dream about.”

A New 9 to 5?

So much has changed since Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton starred together in the 1980’s feminist hit 9 to 5, and yet, so much hasn’t. The film found its three stars taking on their chauvinist, mansplaining, sexually harassing boss and winning, and 38 years later, in real life, there’s still a lot of chauvinist, mansplaining, sexually harassing bosses that need taking on. Perhaps it’s of no surprise then that Hollywood is thinking about remaking the title. Fox is behind the idea and reportedly wants Rashida Jones on board to script the project. We’re still way too early to even think about casting or whether the original women could figure into the plot, though we do hope at least someone keep Cardi B in mind for the 2018 version of Dolly Parton’s role.
