In: St. Vincent Opens Up | Out: More Weinstein Accusations

Well, in retrospect, maybe it wasn’t such a great business idea to make an intense, nearly three-hour sequel to a 35-year-old sci-fi hit few millennials were familiar with and that was only originally a cult hit itself. Despite universal critical raves, Blade Runner 2049 totally underperformed at the box office with an estimated $31.5 million opening. The issue? Women largely stayed away (making up only 29 percent of the audience), as did people under the age of 35 (making up just 37 percent, a big problem for a would-be blockbuster). Interestingly, though, it was star Ryan Gosling’s highest opening ever (despite being super famous, he’s not actually a proven blockbuster entity). The “Kate Winslet and Idris Elba stuck on a mountain” flick The Mountain Between Us came in second with just $10.1 million (not great, but solid enough for a $35 million film). The one box office bright spot this weekend however came in limited release. Sean Baker’s The Florida Project opened with an impressive $38,336 per-screen average. The film is very much expected to be “the little indie that could” on the awards circuit this year, marking the second year in a row the best picture title could belong to a Florida-set film following last year’s Moonlight. Which begs the question, why set a film in an expensive-to-produce dystopian future, when you can just go ahead and set it in Florida instead? Basically the same thing.

Yes, Kaia Gerber may have made the hot debut of the season, but Bella Hadid is still the bearer of the Instagram-It-Girl-Who-Happens-To-Have-A-Famous-Family Model Crown. She was on more international September issues than anyone, after all. Still the model, who happens to turn 21 today, had a rough weekend outside the fashion realm. Heavy is the perfectly proportioned head that wears the crown. First, Twitter turned a kind-of-awkward interview Hadid did with Complex magazine into a meme (see the In & Out headline above). Then Kate McKinnon, of all people, impersonated Hadid on Saturday Night Live alongside host Gal Gadot, who portrayed both Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. The concept: Kendall’s Model House, a show specifically designed to help your turn your brain to mush as a way to cope with the horror of reality. Of course, don’t feel too bad for Hadid. One isn’t truly an icon without an SNL spoof, and it happened for her right before turning 21. She’s fiiiiine.

Harvey Weinstein was forced out of his own company late yesterday just days after The New York Times bombshell report documenting decades of sexual abuse. After further developments over the weekend, the Weinstein Company board had no other choice. Stars like Brie Larson and Rose McGowan have spoken out publicly. Attorney Lisa Bloom, who was originally criticized for representing Weinstein in the first place (by her own mother, Gloria Allred, no less), has decided to quit as Weinstein’s advisor. Three board members of the Weinstein Company have resigned. Democrats are donating his contributions to charity. Sadly, but not at all surprisingly, more accusations are starting to come out. British aristocrat Liza Campbell claims Weinstein once asked her to jump in a bath with him. TV reporter Lauren Sivan says Weinstein fondled himself in front of her at a restaurant. One report claims he once called actress Hayley Atwell a “fat pig” on the set of Brideshead Revisited. Even new shocking tales of Weinstein’s well-known temper are circulating. Nathan Lane claims that Weinstein once threw him against a wall and threatened to destroy his career after cracking a joke. The board who axed Harvey includes his own brother and business partner, Bob Weinstein. He’ll now run the company with chief operating officer David Glasser.
