The Patriarchy

Seventy-six years after the character was first introduced, Wonder Woman’s proper debut as the star of a live action big screen blockbuster finally hits theaters this weekend with the added bonus of it being the first female-led superhero flick of either Marvel or DC Comics’ current wave of films. It may have taken much too long to actually get here, but at least it seems to be worth the wait. The reviews are almost all universally raves, and the film’s 92 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes makes it the best reviewed DC film since The Dark Knight Rises. It’s also expected to rake in anywhere from $65 to $95 million at the American box office alone. In other words, hopefully it should prove that we can have nice things. And! That women can open big time at the box office. Need more things to get excited about? Well, Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes plays a sword-swindling Amazon, Chris Pine has a nearly-nude scene he’s very excited about, and, for those of you who want some Robin Wright but aren’t ready to binge the latest House of Cards season, she’s in it and plays the commander of an Amazon army. It all sounds delightful. Not your cup of tea? Ok, well, the only other new wide-release option is the kids-friendly animated option Captain Underpants, which, sure, seems cute if you have little ones.

Inclusive Shows?

Well, can we have nice things after all? Remember how in Thursday's edition we told you about how Netflix’s CEO wishes the service cancelled more shows? Well, later in the day the service carried through by off-ing the Wachowski sisters’ Sense8 after two seasons. The show was notable for its inclusive cast, with characters that came from all over the world-Marc Jacobs made a cameo this season-and all over the LGBT spectrum (indeed, many noted Netflix’s poor choice of timing: yesterday was the first day of Pride month in America). Variety TV critic Maureen Ryan notes that it’s part of a recent wave of cancellations of diverse, inclusive shows that has also included American Crime, East Los High and The Get Down. It’s not like there’s nothing left. Shonda Rhymes has built an entire empire within ABC’s lineup, and we’re just a week away from new episodes of Orange is the New Black (and a few weeks from the premiere of producer Jenji Kohan’s new Netflix series G.L.O.W.), but it’s never a good feeling when a beloved show is cancelled.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Opus Shallow Hal

Amy Schumer, who is already signed on to a movie with Nicole Kidman, is also teaming up with another dramatic leading lady in a new project, this time Michelle Williams. The pair have signed on to star in I Feel Pretty. Schumer plays a regular woman who bumps her head and wakes up thinking she’s the most attractive woman on earth. With new found confidence, she quickly climbs the ladder at work and impresses her company’s glamorous CEO, as played by Williams. Along the way, Schumer learns that beauty is more than skin deep. You know what this reminds of us? The Gwyneth Paltrow starring not-quite-classic Shallow Hal, except a decidedly less groan-inducing version. In the Paltrow flick, it’s a man who is cursed and thinks Paltrow, wearing a fat suit, is actually the prettiest woman on earth and along the way learns that beauty is more than skin deep. Except, you know, that film posited a woman’s worth through, quite literally, the male gaze, and portrayed love as the ultimate goal. The Schumer/Williams flick, at least from what we know, leaves men (and offensive fat suits) out of the picture all together. So, hey, a little progress.

@RiccardoTisci17

What has former Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci been doing since he stepped down from the French couture house earlier this year? Oh, just enjoying his native Italy. He’s been all over the country lately, and Instagramming his way through it.
