For our money, the best one-two punch of last night’s Golden Globes was Oprah’s stirring speech followed up a few minutes later by Natalie Portman dryly pointing out that all the nominees in the Best Director category were men (despite the fact Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird was one of the biggest winners of the night). Yet, the night was full of other great moments from Nicole Kidman’s sweet dedications to her Big Little Lies-producing partner Reese Witherspoon and her mother to Barbra Streisand reminding people that she was the only woman to win Best Director at the Globes back in 1984, a distinction she wished she no longer had. As for the winners, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association went big on Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri by awarding it four trophies, including Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for Frances McDormand. Surprisingly, The Post, Call Me by Your Name, and Dunkirk were all completely shut out. On the television side, the Globes followed the Emmys by showering Big Little Lies with love, but made some surprising statements as well, including two trophies for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and a Best Actor in a Comedy Series trophy for Aziz Ansari that even the comedian himself seemed blindsided by.

Of course, perhaps even more anticipated than the award ceremony this year was the red carpet. Hollywood actresses, under the banner of the newly formed Time’s Up organization, announced that they’d be wearing all black to stand in solidarity of victims of workplace sexual misconduct and using the pre-show hoopla to send a message. Fashion-wise, as no one should be surprised, there’s still a lot of purely style statements to make when limited to just black. See what everyone wore, here. More interesting, though, were the political and social statements they made. Eight actresses brought female activists as their dates. Emma Watson, for example, brought Marai Larasi, founder of the British organization Imkaan, which aims to end violence against black women and girls. Michelle Williams, meanwhile, brought Tarana Burke, the activist who started the #MeToo movement. Other actresses decided to walk the red carpet together: Natalie Portman linked up with a newly pregnant America Ferrera, Reese Witherspoon went with newly pregnant Eva Longoria, and Jessica Chastain teamed up with Octavia Spencer. Though, one of the most talked about moments of the red carpet early on in the evening was when Will & Grace star Debra Messing called out recent news of gendered pay disparity at the E! network while being interviewed by the E! network. The Last Jedi in China

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has racked up surprisingly strong business but has been stuck in second place behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi for two weeks. Well, the crowd-pleasing sequel finally took the top spot this weekend with a cool $36 million. What good news for Jack Black’s career. Meanwhile, Insidious: The Last Key, the fourth film in the Insidious franchise, took second place with $29 million, thus proving why horror franchises like Insidious get at least four movies. Meanwhile, TLJ actually falls to third with $23.5 million in its fourth week. It will still go down as the highest-grossing film of 2017, but it seems the film is having some problems in the lucrative foreign market of China, in which it just opened. Turns out that the Chinese actually aren’t really that into Star Wars in general, and the film opened up against a homegrown hit, The Ex-File: The Return of the Exes, the third in a comedy series. It still made $28.7 million there, but failed to take the top spot.
