The Crown Returns for the Crown

Eh, the Movies

As the world awaits its next royal wedding, the second season of The Crown comes to Netflix to satiate our curiosity, and apparently, it’s better than the first, according to early critical appraisals. Newsday says it’s “full of characters, life, humor, passion, and buttered scones,” and that creator Peter Morgan “not only has a series to match his 2006 Oscar-winning movie, The Queen, but finally one to exceed it.” (Don’t tell Helen Mirren.) Meanwhile, the box office continues to not offer up much in terms of wide releases. James Franco’s The Disaster Artist expands to 800 cinemas today, and I, Tonya, which bends the conventions of sports biopics and should establish Margot Robbie as a respected actress (if she wasn’t already), opens in six theaters. Otherwise, Just Getting Started opens across the country. It’s an action-comedy that stars Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones. Perhaps tellingly, reviews have not been released yet.

Ultra Violet

Greenery

In 2017, Pantone proclaimed that Greenery, a spring-appropriate, yellow-ish green, was the Color of the Year. Which, sure. We’re not quite sure if we actually saw Greenery all that much over the past 12 months, but never mind that now. Pantone is here to give us our new color for 2018: Ultra Violet. A strong, bright, uncompromising purple; a shade both Prince and Hillary Clinton have been known to wear. It’s the sort of color that says there is strength in femininity. Ultra Violet is not here to take your B.S.—Ultra Violet is here to get its job done. Or, as Pantone puts it, “Ultra Violet is an enigmatic purple shade that evokes the inventive spirit and imaginative thinking that challenges the status quo...Ultra Violet pushes the boundaries of what inspires us to look upward and outward to the future."

Blockbuster Shake-ups

Business as Usual

Making a blockbuster should be easy in this day and age. Anyway, that seems to be the case as Hollywood keeps making decisions thinking there’s an easy formula. Just get a proven star or two and pair them with a well-loved, nostalgia-inducing franchise and—voilà!—you should have a hit, right? It’s worked for Marvel! Yet, other studios are struggling to keep up. After the relative disappointment of Justice League, Warner Brothers is said to be considering a major leadership shake-up for its DC franchise. Other studios are making some interesting decisions. A Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek movie may actually happen. Also, someone decided it was a good idea to cast Ryan Reynolds as a talking Pikachu who solves crimes in a live-action Pokémon movie. Good luck with that.
