With no new major releases this weekend, Pixar's Coco easily repeated as champion of the box office, with about $26 million. Meanwhile, Justice League may have been a relative box office disappointment, but it's still in second place and inching toward a total domestic take of $200 million. In the indiesphere, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water had the fourth-highest per-screen average of the year after opening in (just) two theaters. James Franco's The Disaster Artist pulled in a solid $1.2 million in 19 theaters.

Doing Your Own Fandango

Bryan Singer

A bit of a Hollywood mystery developed over the weekend as director Bryan Singer has failed to return to the set of the planned Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody after Thanksgiving, and production was temporarily halted. The film had already attracted audience buzz, thanks to pictures of star Rami Malek in character as Mercury. According to Deadline, Singer's reps claim he's dealing with “a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family.” But rumors are circulating that the director had disappeared from the shoot previously and that Fox may or may not be quietly reaching out to possible replacement directors just in case. The film already has a planned release date of Christmas Day 2018, so they don't have all the time in the world.

National treasure Britney Spears celebrated her 36th birthday over the weekend, and at least we found out that Madonna is still a fan. The Queen of Pop recorded an impromptu accounting version of the eternal pop princess's classic "Toxic." Though Madge's effort served a double duty: celebrating Brit's b-day and commemorating World AIDS Day. To bring attention to the latter, Madonna captioned the video with the AIDS activist slogan "Silence=Death." Brit interpreted this her own way and in turn decided to break her silence by posting her own video (singing standard "Fools Rush In" in a little black dress). "She’s right…silence=death! These words really stuck with me, because they are so true. I’ve always wanted to do a performance like this," she wrote. A bit of an awkward interpretation of the slogan, but, hey, we got two covers out of two pop royals.
