Tom Cruise’s Appeal to the Youths

It was an incredibly tight weekend at the box office as the top three films all wound up with just a hair over the $17 million mark. With results so close, it may take the industry a little extra time to figure out exactly which film finished where, but it looks like It will glide back into the top spot after a week away with something like $17.3 million. Tom Cruise–vehicle American Made and Kingsman: The Golden Circle then will likely battle it out for second and third, with each just barely passing $17 million. Made currently has the edge, but the real story here is the film’s overall box office disappointment despite strong reviews praising Tom Cruise for his confident performance. It’s the actor’s lowest opening weekend since Jack Reacher. Though it was a considerably cheaper film, it’s also notable that it was even lower than The Mummy. The problem? People under 25 showed little interest in the film. Though, Cruise has another Mission Impossible set for next year, so let’s hold off on the career obituaries. Besides, it could be worse. It could be Flatliners. The Ellen Page–led film was savaged by critics (just 3 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences stayed away completely. It finished with just $6.5 million.

Platform Crocs, Apparently

Traditional Coats

Remember those pants that zipped off into capris that zipped off into shorts? Yes, those are back, thanks to Balenciaga's latest collection, although with an artful twist. Of course, those took second place in the “Wait, what…?” category at the show behind the platform Crocs that stomped down the runway. Yes, really, platform Crocs. Creative director Demna Gvasalia was also into tartans, jackets, and coats sliced and worn like smocks or front plates for other garments. The collection also featured newsprint (perhaps he’s really into Taylor Swift’s Reputation?). Meanwhile, Givenchy entered a new era. After 12 long years of (successfully) doing whatever he wanted with the label, Riccardo Tisci left the house earlier this year. Clare Waight Keller debuted as his replacement and brought the house back in line with its heritage by combing through the archives. Fitting then that Lily Collins, perhaps a modern-day version of Hubert de Givenchy’s muse Audrey Hepburn, was front row (take an exclusive peek into how she got ready for the show here). American designer Joseph Altuzarra also made a Paris debut of his own—by moving the show for his own label there (find behind-the-scenes photos here).

Donald Trump

Please mark this down as the weekend where Kim Kardashian outsmarted a U.S. president. Of course, this may be news if any other U.S. president besides Donald Trump were involved. Instead, it’s almost expected. Trump woke up Saturday morning and went into one of his “Let’s just ruin everyone’s weekend” tweet storms and lashed out at the work ethic of the Puerto Rican people, San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, and, just for good measure and consistency, the media. In one tweet, he wrote, “To the people of Puerto Rico: Do not believe the #FakeNews! #PRStrong.” That’s when Kim Kardashian decided to jump in, pointing out, “They don’t have power to watch the news!!! Please stop tweeting & golfing while people are dying! Please step up & help!” Of course, Kardashian’s interjection was almost polite in contrast to some others. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda informed the president he was “going straight to hell.” More righteous celebrity anger this way. Other celebs, like Reese Witherspoon and Olivia Wilde, decided to raise awareness for Puerto Rico relief funds by posting awkward teenage photos as part of the #PuberMe challenge started by comedian Nick Kroll.
