Hard Feelings

The saga around one of the most talked about jackets of the year has reached a happy conclusion. As you may recall, during its most recent resort show, Gucci sent out a jacket that seemed to take direct inspiration from a creation Harlem designer Dapper Dan had made back in the ‘80s. Twitter was lit up with cries of “appropriation,” but Dan himself remained silent. Now we know why. Dan (né Daniel Day) is set to re-open his boutique with assistance from Gucci, has a capsule collection with the brand on the way, and is the star of the brand’s latest tailoring ad campaign. “The magic that took place as a result of what he did was bringing these two parallel universes together,” Dan told The New York Times. “I was never apprehensive about what took place. The public was more up in arms than me.” In the meantime, the jacket has found at least one fan: Beyoncé was spotted wearing it two weekends ago.

Giving Up on Childhood Wonder

The toy hit of the summer has found a second-life with distinguishing adults. Yes, fidgets spinners for adults are very, very much in at the moment. Need proof? Well, first of all, designer Tory Burch featured a fidget spinner hung from a chain as a necklace during her latest fashion show. Dame Judi Dench has also taken to carrying a miniature version. During a recent interview for her film Victoria & Abdul, her co-star Ali Fazal gushed about her on-trend toy. “My grandson gave it to me," she replied, in a tone suggesting she wasn’t sure what the fuss was about. Indeed, the Washington Post reported last month that while kids are over the fad, adults, who tend to have more real stress to reduce, are just getting into them. “I still haven’t figured out if it’s socially acceptable for me to have this thing,” one adult fidget spinner owner told the paper. “Are childhood and adult life merging into this amorphous blob?” Notably, he made those comments before Judi Dench was in on the trend.

Asian Stereotypes

Hollywood has an Asian problem that is only just now starting to confront. Over the summer, producers of Hawaii Five-O caused quite the stink by refusing to pay its two Asian stars as much as other castmates, so those actors, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, decided to leave. Then producers of a Hellboy reboot caused more controversy when they cast white actor Ed Skrein as a character who is of Asian descent in the comics. Skrein, classily, left the project when he learned the character’s true background. Now, as luck would have it, Dae Kim is in talks to replace Skrein in the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s a big battle won, but the war is far from over. An article in Paste  magazine included a quote from a book about Hollywood inequality by a casting director who claimed Asian actors are hard to cast because “they’re not very expressive.” Twitter, of course, struck back.
