Your Nerves

After months of mystery and speculation, the Jennifer Lawrence-starring psychological horror film mother! finally made its debut at the Venice Film Festival and the early word from critics is that it is, hmm, should we say a “total WTF spectacle!” Which isn’t too say that critics don’t like it. They do! (Never mind the fact that some in the stuffy audience booed the film). Some key phrases that have popped up in reviews: “Breathless chortling spasms of WTF disbelief," “bombastic, ludicrous and fabulous,” and, "A carnival ride of horrific human behavior.” Read more of the critical consensus here. Be wary of spoilers, but apparently it’s so crazy it might actually be spoiler-proof. In any event you can see for yourself when the film opens wide on September 15th. In the meantime, you can gaze upon the lovely ballerina-esque Dior gown Lawrence wore to the premiere.

Star Wars Directors

What, exactly, is going on over at Lucas Films? The Disney-owned guardians of the Star Wars franchise seem to be having a lot of directorial problems at the moment. Hollywood is still reeling from that fact that directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller departed the young Han Solo standalone film in the middle of filming. Now comes news that Star Wars Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow is out as well. At least in this case, that film hasn’t actually started production (indeed Episode VIII isn’t out until December). Trevorrow was hired after his success at the helm of Jurassic World, but in between he released the curious box office bomb The Book of Henry that had some questioning whether he actually had the talent to direct the final film in the Star Wars main saga. It’s not exactly clear why Trevorror departed under “mutual” agreement, but it’s a curious trend emerging (Rogue One was also reportedly forced to undergo several edits and reshoots at the behest of producers over the head of director Rian Johnson). Maybe the question isn’t so much that Lucas Films exec Kathleen Kennedy has let so many directors go, but rather whether she’s hiring the correct ones for the job in the first place

Cher Critics

Cher and Madonna may be stateswomen of pop, but they both have a knack for social media stronger than some of their younger competitors. Madonna, once queen of tightly controlled image reinventions, isn’t afraid to get incredibly real on both Twitter and Instagram. In fact, after recently moving to Portugal, Madge has apparently had problems getting some packages delivered because, as she put it on Twitter, the country’s customs agency doesn’t really think she’s the actual Madonna. Though, it was Cher who provided Tuesday's most memorable Tweet. She was one of many celebs who disapproved of the Trump administration's decision to end President Obama’s Dreamers program on Twitter, but she took it a step forward by offering her home as a sanctuary for anyone fearful of facing deporation. “I’ll believe it when I see it,” wrote one Twitter troll. “Then keep your eyes open bitch” clapped back Cher.
