A Slow August Box Office

  Out Text Logo

Ticket Sales

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series was considered by many almost unadaptable for the screen. After several directors attempting it before giving up (J.J. Abrams included), Sony and director Nikolaj Arcel finally delivered an attempt, but it was greeted with negative reviews and a soft $19.5 million opening. That was still good enough for the top spot at the box office in a slow weekend, but it’s not exactly a triumph (though, plans to roll the film out into a television series, with star Idris Elba on board, remain unaffected). Meanwhile, Halle Berry vehicle Kidnap opened in 5th place with $10.2 million (all things considered, a decent result for a modestly budgeted film that always meant to be a summer guilty pleasure) while Kathryn Bigelow’s Civil Rights-era thriller Detroit took in $7.5 million. The first weekend of August has rarely been a box office hotspot, though in recent years a few superhero flicks (Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad) have done record-breaking numbers here. This year though, Hollywood had no caped crusaders to unleash so it was back to business as usual for the quiet weekend.

Bad Series Finales

Both Will & Grace and Roseanne had two of the most divisive series finales in recent sitcom memory (in Roseanne’s John Goodman’s character was revealed to have died while Laurie Metcalf’s was revealed to be a lesbian; Will & Grace meanwhile jumped into the future to reveal that the two titular characters went decades without speaking). Coincidentally both series are being revived, and producers for both have confirmed that they’re just going to ignore those series finales all together. At a TV Critics Association event this weekend, Roseanne producers explained they may acknowledge some of the weirder finale revelations but will quickly explain them away. Meanwhile, don’t expect TV revivals to end anytime soon. Deadline recently spoke to NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt who revealed that he’s talked to the creators of shows like The Office, 30 Rock, The West Wing and ER about revivals. All turned him down, but, hey, eventually some creator is going to say yes. The cast of Wings can’t be too busy, right?

This Is Us Doubters

Speaking of the Television Critics Association, the group capped off their recent conference by handing out their TCA Awards which can be seen as the kick-off to the Emmys-driven TV awards season. The group handed its consolidated best drama performance award to Carrie Coon for her works in The Leftovers and Fargo, while Donald Glover took comedy. His Atlanta also took best comedy show, while The Handmaid’s Tale took both drama and show of the year (yes, Hulu has finally made its mark on the awards circuit). Big Little Lies, meanwhile, won best limited series or TV movie, while This Is Us was awarded as the best new show. So it turns out your mom, your aunt Linda and all your friends were right. This Is Us is good and you should watch it.
