Feuding With Non-Human Entities

The Ocean

For celebrities, feuding with people is out. Beefing with places and things is now very in. For example, Kendall Jenner is in a social media fight with the Brooklyn hipster hotspot Baby’s All Right. She reportedly dropped by the venue last week while her friend A$AP Rocky was performing, but the next morning the bar posted her $24 tab on Instagram and claimed she hadn’t left a tip. Jenner replied on Twitter saying she had tipped in cash, but the bar continued to post (and in some cases delete) Instagrams claiming she was lying. Meanwhile, you may remember from last week that Jaden Smith is in a feud with vegan mayo, or, more specifically, his bottled water startup is suing a vegan mayo startup. Though, it’s Liam Gallagher, the Oasis frontman known just as much for his fighting words as he is his music at this point, who really took the cake. He’s in a fight with 71 percent of the Earth’s surface. Yes, he’s called out each and every body of water. In a new interview with Noisey, he proclaimed, “fuck the sea. I ain't going in that. Fuck that, mate. That ain't meant for us. That's meant for the sharks, and the jellyfish, tadpoles and stuff.” He did later add that his feud with water does not extend to hot tubs, which he happens to enjoy.

The Obvious

Hollywood is so hot on adaptations that it’s just now adapting things that don’t even have plots. They’ve done it with board games (Battleship, Jumanji), toy lines (Transformers), and theme park rides (Pirates of the Caribbean). Now they’re doing with New Age- self help books. Remember The Secret, the book about the laws of attraction that Oprah made you read in 2006? You know, the one that told you just to think about things and they would come true? Yeah, well, it’s being turned into a movie starring Katie Holmes. This Is Us writer Bekah Brunstetter wrote the script, and it will follow Holmes as a young widow who meets a mysterious handyman. We wonder how many are still out there following The Secret and would voluntarily see the film. Some of us have been thinking about a perfect body, a dream partner, and a mid-six-figure salary since 2006 and it still hasn’t happened.

Our September issue cover hit the web this morning, and it stars Katy Perry. The singer tells us she occasionally cries to her own songs: “Sometimes they are about people who are no longer in my life, or they’re about unrequited love.” Though, in the accompanying spread, shot by Steven Klein, the pop star looks quite tough as a neo-noir femme fatale. As it turns out, this September issue isn’t just relegated to two dimensional paper. Download the W "Beyond the Page" app, and you can watch Katy Perry and several of the other photo stories in the issue, including photographer Collier Schorr's take on Fall's androgynous suiting trend. The issue also marks the last for our departing creative and fashion director Edward Enninful before he took the helm of British Vogue. Check out a sneak peek of one of his last stories, a collaboration with photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott that serves as a homage to unapologetic fashion, diversity, and, of course, New York City.
