Critics weight in on Rihanna and Cara Delevingne's new film, and they're decidedly mixed.”

Fashion Being Inspired By Art

  Out Text Logo

Fashion Stealing Art

The worlds of art and fashion may be closely linked, and the latter may be frequently inspired by the former, but that doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all. Fashion can’t just steal directly from art, and, yet, two artists made recent claims that fashion labels did just that. Artist Brad Troemel claims that designer Vika Gazinskaya straight-up ripped off visuals from work he debuted last year at New York’s Tomorrow Gallery for her Spring 2018 collection. On Instagram, Troemel called one garment from the collection “a swatch-by-swatch copy” of one of his works, and referred to Gazinskaya as “ya goof.” The designer then later jumped into the Instagram comments to admit that she was, indeed, inspired by Troemel’s work, but had just forgotten his name and hence didn’t credit him. Meanwhile, a group of New York City graffiti artists is suing label Vince Camuto for using their work in its latest campaign. There’s actually some precedent here, as other graffiti artist have successfully settled with fashion labels for using their work in advertising before.

Valerian’s Visuals (and Rihanna)

Valerian’s Plot

What to make of Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets, Europe’s most expensive movie ever based on an obscure (at least to Americans) comic book series? Well, ahead of the film’s release on July 21st, the first batch of reviews are in and, boy, do the run the gamut. Some are calling it one of summer’s most original and exciting films. Others are calling it one of the worst of the year. Just about everyone seems to think that the visuals are absolutely stunning. Several critics have referred to Rihanna’s extended cameo as shapeshifting erotic dancer as “stupid,” and somehow meant it as a compliment. Co-star Cara Delevingne’s performance is also faring better than that of leading man Dane DeHaan. Though, it’s the plot and pacing that most critics seem to be really taking an issue with. But, if you’re looking for a spiritual successor to director Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, which also mystified critics upon its release before attaining status as a cult favorite, this might be it.

A New Golden Age of LGBT Television?

  Out Text Logo

All Straights, All The Time

We may be living in the age of peak TV, but shows centered on LGBT folks still seem few and far between. Sure, there’s more than enough non-straight character populating Shonda Rhimes shows and Netflix comedies, but where are the shows specifically about them? Well, good news. Showtime is apparently bringing back their seminal show The L Word, not as a reboot but as a continuation of the much-loved original. Netflix, too, is apparently in early talks to bring back another round of Tales of the City, a set of miniseries that had previously called both Showtime and PBS home (Netflix is also bringing back its own Sense8 for a two-hour special after fan outcry). And, of course, there’s the Will & Grace relaunch. Incidentally, Rhimes is also producing a new American version of British LGBT series Cucumber along with Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg. Somewhere, the cast of Queer as Folk is hoping from a text from their managers.

Lindsey Wixson
@LindseyWixson

After being scouted at age 15 by Steven Meisel, model Linsey Wixson went onto an enviable career (including numerous appearances in W). Now, at just 23, she’s decided to retire from the modeling game as a foot injury prevents her from regularly wearing high heels again. Her next career might involve interior design and pottery.
