A Superhero Summer Battle Royale

Spoilers

Sure, the fact that we’re on our third Spider-Man in 15 years may seem strange, but according to the box office it makes perfect sense because no matter the iteration, the web slinger continues to be a money-maker. Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in about $117 million over the weekend, the third highest opening of the year domestically. That’s higher even than Wonder Woman and now the stage is set for which superhero movie will be the biggest of the summer (and really, when it comes to tentpole movies, it seems like nothing but superhero movies really matter this summer). Wonder Woman has shown incredible staying power (it was fourth and racked up another $10 million this weekend), and is now about $17 million away from catching up with May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It remains to be seen if Spider-Man can hold as strong, and maybe it’s worth noting that the film has a few surprising twists that warrant heading to the theater soon lest you get disappointed with some “Snape killed Dumbledore”-level spoilers.

Craig? Daniel Craig?

Idris Elba

Superheroes may be chic right now, but let’s not forget the world’s original long-running franchise love: Bond. James Bond. The super spy series has been stuck in purgatory since 2015’s Spectre amidst reports that Craig wanted to move on (and the fact that movie seemed like it was scripted as a natural endpoint for Craig’s iteration of 007). Now, The Mirror is reporting that Craig will indeed return for what will be the 25th film in the official Bond canon. The story also claims that producers want Adele back to sing the theme song (this wouldn’t be unprecedented. Shirley Bassey sang three theme songs, all considered classics). For those who are especially huge Craig fans, or were fantasizing about rumors that someone like Idris Elba might take over the role, we should add the obvious caveat that The Mirror is, well, a British tabloid, and we should all know by now how quick and loose they play with rumors. There is also another less flashy factor to figure out before Bond 25 hits screens: the series four-picture distribution deal with Sony is over, and bidding, involving as many as five studios, is currently underway to decide who will nab the distribution rights to the MGM and Eon production-owned franchise.

Being Proud of Your Dad Bod

Being Into Dad Bod

A short and scurrilous bit of Page Six gossip to consider as you head back into the work week in the midst of beach season. Per their anonymous source Leonardo DiCaprio hosted a Fourth of July bash at his Malibu compound where he was overheard boasting to a set of models that he never worked out. Honestly, DiCaprio has so many viable things to boast about-like, say, the fact that he owns a private Malibu compound-that it does seem weird that he’d draw attention to his notorious “dad bod” status. The source’s kicker: “The girls were like, ‘Does he think that’s attractive? It’s not like he’s in ‘Titanic’ shape anymore.’” No word on how the scene played out, but it’s not like DiCaprio is hurting for models' attention in general. The moral of the story: be comfortable and own your flaws, but focus on your positives.
