To sign up for this newsletter click here. | | | | | | | | | |  | | | |  | | Just days after announcing that Bouchra Jarrar was departing Lanvin after less than a year and a half as Creative Director, France’s oldest continually operating high fashion label made the surprising announcement that Olivier Lapidus will take her place. Who is Lapidus? Well, he’s the son of the late fashion designer Olivier Lapidus, had a stint in the ‘80s as the designer for Balmain Homme, worked at his father’s company, and has spent the past few years doing collaborative projects and interior design work. The announcement comes with a rumor by way of Business of Fashion that the plan is to remake Lanvin as something of a complete lifestyle brand, or as their source terms it a “French Michael Kors.” Lapidus however tells Vogue that, actually, he’ll concentrate on bringing the brand into the social media era. “When we began discussions, Lanvin was interested by my [internet] approach. New technologies can be very pertinent for the oldest couture house in France,” he said, adding, “clearly there is something innovative to tap there in terms of positioning and communications.” Indeed, Lapidus recently launched his own brand via Instagram (as of this writing the Création Olivier Lapidus account has 167 followers). | | | | | To film geeks, director Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is one of the most anticipated movies of the year for its ambitious scope and dedication to practical effects. To pop music geeks, Dunkirk is one of the most anticipated movies of the year due to the fact that it marks Harry Styles’ acting debut. As it turns out, Nolan might not have totally been aware about what he was getting into by casting Styles as a soldier. “My daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn't really that aware of it,” Nolan recently told the AP about Styles’ large fan base. Though, he doesn’t regret it. “When I cast Heath Ledger as the Joker, it raised a lot of eyebrows and caused a lot of comment,” Nolan also told Entertainment Tonight. “I have to trust my instincts, and Harry was perfect for this part.” | | An Avalanche of Awkward Artsiness | James Franco always has a lot going on. Some may say too much. Indeed, just browse at his IMDb page and see all the recent movies he’s starred in that you have likely never heard of. Not content with a traditional Hollywood career path, Franco continually swerves into work that is odd, indie, artsy, challenging or, occasionally, just straight up bad. Yet, the always ambitious Franco may be heading towards a string of more traditional triumphs. There is, of course, his starring role in HBO’s upcoming prestige ‘70s porno world drama The Deuce (the latest trailer for the series just dropped). His film, The Disaster Artist, premiered at SXSW earlier this year and buzz is it could finally earn him respect as a director in his own right. Now comes news that he’ll be one of the stars The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the six-episode Western miniseries from Hollywood heavyweights the Coen brothers.
