"Style is the only thing you can’t buy. It’s not in a shopping bag, a label, or a price tag. It’s something reflected from our soul to the outside world—an emotion."

Mummies

The appropriate word to describe the performance of the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy reboot might be “yikes.” Following a weekend in which Wonder Woman notched up critical aplomb, massive ticket sales and fawning audience feedback, The Mummy basically did the opposite (allowing, of course, Wonder Woman to hold on to the top spot for another week). With a budget estimated to be somewhere above $300 million, the monster pic only took in around $32 million domestically. That’s not good news for a film that Universal had planned to launch an entire shared cinematic universe around. Hollywood bigwigs are increasingly blaming review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes for blockbuster bombs. The Mummy notched up just a 17 percent “fresh” score, but the performance of one of this weekend’s other wide releases doesn’t line up with the theory. Scary movie It Comes Out Night got critical raves (and an enviable 86 percent “fresh” score), but not only did it come in below expectation with just $6 million, but audience feedback services also found that moviegoers who did turn out for the film ended up liking it even less than The Mummy

Her Feud With Taylor Swift?

To celebrate (and promote) the release of her new album Witness, Katy Perry spent the entire weekend livestreaming her existence. There was also a round of in-depth interviews with the singer released. Basically, there was more new Katy Perry information unloaded this weekend that anyone could have asked for. So what did learn? Well, she thinks Diplo is a terrible lover, she’s sorry about her past ignorance on the topic of cultural appropriation, she considers the persona she projected during her early career merely a created character, she hung out with Joanne the Scammer, and she candidly discussed mental health issues. Oh, right, she’s also ready to make up with Taylor Swift, offered a public appology, and is still a fan of the Nashville-by-way-of-Pennsylvania singer. As for how that album is actually doing? Well, Billboard reports it's on track to debut at No. 1 on the album charts and may have the biggest sales week for a female musician since Lady Gaga’s Joanne

Babadook, Gay Icon

Erasing Obvious Queer Subtext

The Babadook is the world’s new gay icon. Yes, the title character from Jennifer Kent’s 2014 psychological horror film is here, he is queer, and you all better get used to it. Seriously, the Babadook was not only spotted attending LGBT Pride parades across the globe but also stopped by the filming of the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Maybe you’re thinking, “Hey, I saw that movie on Netflix and I don’t think Babadook was supposed to be gay.” Ok, fine, fair enough, but maybe you didn’t see the meme the phenomenon stemmed from. It started months ago on Tumblr, and played into the fact that LGBT people historically have not found themselves equally represented in the media openly so they’ve often had to delve into pop culture subtext to feel a connection. Sometimes it’s because behind-the-scenes creatives meant it that way (see Sex and the City, as just one of many examples), and sometimes it wasn’t intended that way but still works anyway (see, hmmm, Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli’s entire careers). Last week, Vulture revived the formerly low-key meme in time for Pride month and now it’s everywhere. Anyway, maybe if Universal wants their Tom Cruise-led Monster movie shared universe to succeed they should include the gay Babadook. Representation matters.

Vienna’s Life Ball is the one time a year where the vibe of the highfalutin charity gala and underground queer nightlife come together. Bill Clinton has shown up a few times before, and so has former RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Violet Chacki, seen here with New York nightlife icon Amanda Lepore and performance artist Love Bailey.
