Lip-Syncing For Your Life

Ignoring Its Drag Roots

We’re guessing some form of lip-syncing began sometime after the advent of recorded music, but if there is one group we can thank for honing it into a valid form of entertainment in and of itself it's drag queens. In the past few years, thanks to YouTube fads, specialty apps and Jimmy Fallon skits, lip-syncing has slipped into the mainstream, all too often without even a nod to its drag roots. Of course, those Jimmy Fallon skits were spun off into their own show Lip Sync Battle. It was actually Channing Tatum who appeared on the program last year and paid tribute to the drag arts: he donned a wig and heels to perform Beyoncé’s “Who Run The World (Girls).” Now other A-list men are following suit. On the most recent Saturday Night Live, Chris Pine played an auto body shop worker who suddenly realizes that he and all his coworkers secretly love RuPaul’s Drag Race and can’t fight the urge to lip-sync against each other. Then, on a special edition of Lip Sync Battle aired just before the MTV Television and Movie Awards, Spider-Man star Tom Holland did his best baby Rihanna drag and set the internet ablaze with his rendition of “Umbrella.” It’s not that all future lip-syncing necessarily requires a wig and some face contour, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Pop Stars Playing Nice

Jay-Z vs. Nas it is not, but the Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift feud seems to have a surprisingly long shelf life for something that, if the gossip is to be believed, started because one pop star poached backup dancers from the other’s tour. Maybe that’s because both pop stars find the storyline advantageous to promoting their music. Swift after all first hinted at the existence at the feud (without naming names) in her song “Bad Blood”and proceeded to roll out a high price, celebrity cameo-ridden music video to promote it. If Perry reacted at all, it was only with a few subtweets (and even that’s questionable). Now, however, Perry finally has a new album coming out, and many are wondering if she’s set to release an answer song. Entertainment Weekly asked her point black, and amidst a word salad answer she did say, “Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey.” On Tuesday, word broke that Swift's ex Calvin Harris has now recruited Perry for a collaboration on his next album. Will this be the “Bad Blood” 2.0 everyone seems to want? Who knows! Will this feud ever go away? It seems unclear. Will Swift and Perry find a way to bury the hatchet with a highly watched televised performance and surprise collaboration? At least some flack in their entourages is already dreaming about it.

Gray Hair

Science is great and all, but did you know that until just recently no one really had any idea how exactly our hair turns gray when we age? Maybe you’re thinking “Well, did we really need to devote time and energy to that anyway?” Well, turns out science didn’t think so either, and only accidentally made the discovery during unrelated research into rare genetic diseases tumors. Regardless of the circumstances, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have no identified the cells that cause hair to turn grey and white with age. So what does this mean? Well, it’s now possible that some sort of medicine could be created to stop your hair from graying completely. Until then we’ll all just have to go on using hair dye.

Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and Justine Skye are all on vacation together in some sunny place in the world. Or maybe it’s not a vacation at all, and they’re all just working on the same shoot or promotion for a music festival that won't at all self-destruct. In any event, it sure looks nice.
