In: Goldie Hawn’s Return | Out: American Idol’s Return

American Idol’s return is creating more drama than the show ever did. Meanwhile, Goldie Hawn’s return is a delight.

"It is not the question, 'What am I going to be when I grow up?' You should ask the question, 'Who am I going to be when I grow up?"

King Arthur’s Second Reign

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will likely take the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, it at least has some new competition. The most talked about is Snatched, which marks Amy Schumer first lead role since her 2015 breakthrough Trainwreck and Goldie Hawn’s first in 15 years (her last: 2002’s forgotten gem The Banger Sisters). The reviews are neither raving nor savaged, and as Richard Lawson at Vanity Fair puts it, “Snatched does deliver Goldie Hawn back into our lives, which is a pretty significant gift.” It should also make the perfect choice for anyone who wants to take mom to the movies this weekend. On the flip side is Guy Ritchie's take on King Arthur with star Charlie Hunnam. The movie has franchise-sized aspirations, but the mixed reviews might put a damper on that. If you’re particularly attuned to critical reception and happen to live near an indie cinema, then check out ‘80s set Australian psychological thriller Hounds of Love, which is getting almost universal raves for its impressive visuals and haunting plot.

American Idol Drama

ABC’s decision to dust off and revive American Idol, despite the show having only been retired for just a year, has created a shocking amount of drama that’s rippling through the entertainment industry. Seriously, there’s multiple storylines afoot, but lets start with Ryan Seacrest. He just recently signed on to host ABC’s Live with Kelly Ripa. Ripa, of course, just lost one co-host to Good Morning America and, according to rumors, was afraid she might already lose another one to yet another ABC property, though, the pair tried to squash any rumors of discord by addressing them on air on Thursday.  Then there’s the fact that some television producers who have pilots pending with ABC (including powerhouses like Amy Poehler and Diablo Cody) are shocked that the network just gave over such a huge portion of its schedule next year to the show, thus putting their projects in jeopardy. As it turns out, not even two of Idol’s most successful alumni have the franchise’s back. Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson both just signed on to judge future seasons of the show’s NBC archrival The Voice. Doesn’t ABC know that when it comes to reality television the drama is best kept for in front of the cameras?

Donald Trump

Speaking of reality TV-level drama, we now turn our attention to the White House. For a guy who just took the unprecedented step of suddenly firing an FBI director, President Donald Trump can’t seem to let his media feuds go. Time released an interview conducted with the president on Monday in which he pretty much goes after everyone in cable news who doesn’t work for Fox and even a late night host. He called CNN’s Chris Cuomo a “chained lunatic,” bashed Don Lemon as “the dumbest person in broadcasting,” said Joe Scarborough has “got some problems,” and said Stephen Colbert is “filthy” and “a no-talent guy.” If that wasn’t enough, the president revived his ongoing feud with former standup comedian and crafts enthusiast Rosie O’Donnell on Twitter. To be exact, he retweeted a months-old O’Donnell tweet that read “FIRE COMEY” and wrote, “We finally agree on something Rosie.” In related news, 20 state attorney generals called for an independent probe into Russia’s election interference on Thursday.

Not only did we recently learn that Laura Dern is on Instagram, but that she only has 108k followers. Obviously she deserves more.
