The Speaking Circuit

If George W. Bush is now one of America’s most talked about figurative painters, then why can’t Bill Clinton write a novel? Yes, Clinton is making official first foray into fiction, but he’s not out to write the great American novel. Instead, he’ll try his hand at the “dad at the airport” genre and team up with one of America’s greatest “dad at the airport” writers James Patterson, the blockbuster-selling spy novelist behind tomes like Along Came a Spider and the Women’s Murder Club series. According to publisher Little, Brown and Co. the thriller will be titled The President Is Missing, and will be “informed by insider details that only a President can know.” Clinton says the work “been a lot of fun.” Frankly, we’re all for this trend of former presidents turning to the arts. It’s less controversial work than the highly-paid speaking circuit after all. Now we’re just awaiting Barack Obama to announce he’s co-choreographing a ballet or debuting an immersive video art experience at the next Whitney Biennial or something.

Reviving Dormant Sci-Fi Franchises

Anything New

The Stars War and Trek may be the headliners of the fad, but Hollywood keeps reviving dormant science fiction franchises, and somewhat surprisingly, making the case that they should be. Alien: Covenant doesn’t open until Friday, and yet most critics have already weighed in, and more or less approve. “The most satisfying entry in the six-films-and-counting franchise since the first two,” writes Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter. “Stylistically, the film is a thing of cool beauty, with superb effects and a lovely score,” he adds. Monday also saw the debut of the first trailer for the Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto-starring Blade Runner sequel Blade Runner 2049, and the internet was stunned. Reboots of Dune, Escape From New York, Logan’s Run and Predator are also in the works. It’s funny though that so many sci-fi franchises are about the future, and yet none of them predicted a future in which we just keep remaking the same set of movies over and over again every 25 years.

An American Luxury Conglomerate

Letting the French Have All The Fun

Americans do not do luxury conglomerates like the French. While LVMH owns everything from Dior to Louis Vuitton and Kering controls the likes of Balenciaga, YSL and Gucci, America doesn’t have any similar groups. Coach, however, is trying to change that. The handbag company bought up Stuart Weitzman back in 2015 and, just on Monday, scooped up Kate Spade for a cool $2.4 billion. "Through this acquisition, we will create the first New York–based house of modern luxury lifestyle brands, defined by authentic, distinctive products and fashion innovation," boasted Coach chief executive Victor Luis. While the trio of brands now under Coach’s parental control doesn’t quite compete with those French companies, it’s still a development to keep an eye on. There’s no rumors that Coach has any interest in buying any other specific American labels, but if the strategy proves a success it’s not a stretch to imagine they might go shopping again.
