Ghost Texts

King Kong

The box office story of the weekend will be whether Kong: Skull Island (another stab at King Kong that hopefully provided Brie Larson with a nice paycheck) can topple reigning champ Logan. An exciting showdown for teenage boys, we’re sure. Naturally, we’re more excited for Kristen Stewart’s latest Personal Shopper. The Olivier Assayas-directed modern ghost story finally hits theaters this weekend (though it seems like we’ve been writing about it at W forever now), and might be one of Stewart’s best performances to date. Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning faces off against violent, mysterious preacher this weekend in the divisive but feminist-tinged old west flick Brimstone. French-Belgian horror film Raw also makes its American bow this weekend. The female-fronted and female-directed campus cannibal movie is actually the best reviewed out of the bunch. All three counter-program options, however, are only available in select theaters, but hopefully you’ll be able to track one down in order to avoid the otherwise overly testosterone-fueled offerings this weekend.

Being Obsessed with Hillary Clinton’s Hair Again, Apparently

Two Decades Worth of Progress

During Michelle Obama’s time as first lady that focus was on her fashion. Something she was keenly aware of and used to promote young American designers. It was a different story for Hillary Clinton. Her seemingly ever-changing hairstyles commanded the attention in the media instead of her clothes. “If I want to knock a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle,” she once quipped. Of course, a lot of that coverage wasn’t exactly nice. It seemed like a thing of the past in recent years, but apparently old habits die hard. Clinton made two public appearances on Wednesday for International Women’s Day and just so happened to be sporting a new ‘do. The tabloid press rushed out coverage like it was 1996 all over again. Unfortunately it seemed to eclipse what she actually said yesterday at the 16th annual Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards. “Never lose your optimism, your persistence and your resistance,” she told the crowd

The 2016 Election at HBO, Of Course

Julianne Moore’s Sarah Palin

Speaking of Hillary Clinton…HBO has a knack for turning the presidential campaign reporting of Mark Halperin and John Heilemann into critically acclaimed TV movies. There was already Recount about the 2000 election and the 2008-election themed Game Change (how could you forget Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin?). So, of course, they’re going to make it an official trilogy with a go at the most recent election as well. HBO’s hair department won’t have to worry too much about Clinton’s do, though, as the film will focus more on the Donald Trump side of things (as one would suspect). We’re sure it will be an exciting film, but perhaps not as exciting as the casting announcements. Who will play Trump? (Probably not Alec Baldwin, as he’s supposedly retiring his impression soon). Which actress will inevitably win an Emmy as Kellyanne Conway? (We’ve said it before, but in our minds it’s Nicole Kidman’s job for the taking). How great will John Goodman be as Steve Bannon? Maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves, but did you see 10 Cloverfield Lane? The man can do creepy.
