Women in Red

Complacency

The first International Women’s Day was held in 1909 in New York City, thanks to organization from Socialist Party of America. The celebration finally went mainstream in 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the day as its own. In 2017, it seems more relevant than ever as it comes just months after the Women’s March on Washington. In fact, the organizers of the march are promoting a “Day Without a Woman” strike to coincide with the annual day. The protest urges women to refrain from work and take a pause from shopping (except from small and women-owned businesses, like, say, some of these items) to help illustrate the economic importance of woman. Organizers acknowledge that different women can contribute or show solidarity in different ways, and several guides have popped up to explain your legal rights should you decide to sit the day out in strike. Though, organizers point out that one of the simplest things you can do is simply wear red in solidarity.

Fashion Month, Finally

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the international fashion elite throwing their stilettos into the corner, of runway models’ beautiful heads hitting the pillow in anticipation of a full night of sleep, of designers packing their bags for a much-needed, far-off beach vacation. Yes, another fashion month is finally over, but what a final day it was. It began in Paris, as assuredly very few days in Paris have ever begun before, with a space shuttle. Yes, Karl Lagerfeld commissioned a Chanel-branded model of a space shuttle to serve as the centerpiece of the brand’s latest show. At the end, before a front row that included Lily-Rose Depp, Cara Delevingne and Pharrell Williams, the shuttle actually launched (well, appeared to, thanks to pyrotechnics and hydraulics). While Lagerfeld was feeling for outerspace, Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière was in an artsier mood. He staged his show in the Louvre’s sculpture court (the front row there included Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, Michelle Williams and Justin Theroux -- sans Aniston). The result: a collection of clothes that would seem at home on a cool French girl who happens to spend a lot of time in museums.

David Letterman Ragging on Trump

Alec Baldwin Ragging on Trump

Despite the fact he just announced he’s teaming up with former Spy magazine editor Kurt to write a fictional book about Donald Trump’s first year in office, Alec Baldwin doesn’t expect to play the Prez forever. “I’m not going to do it much longer, the impersonation, I don’t know how much more people can take it,” he recently told Extra! He also clarified that, much like the real Trump, he won’t be attending the White House Correspondents Dinner in character either (despite the hopes and dreams of the internet). Of course, it’s not like where in short supply of anyone making fun of Trump through late night TV venues. Even David Letterman, who is retired, is still happy to pop back up in public to take shots at the president. In a long interview with New York, Letterman claims that comedians have a duty to make fun of Trump, and he, almost wistfully, remembers the many time he interviewed Trump before he was a political force: “He was a joke of a wealthy guy. We didn’t take him seriously. He’d sit down, and I would just start making fun of him. He never had any retort. He was big and doughy, and you could beat him up. He seemed to have a good time, and the audience loved it, and that was Donald Trump."
